In 1718, Franciscans were
sent to the Texas territory in hopes of
converting the native Indians to the Spanish
religion and culture. Thirteen years
later, 5 Missions were started along the San
Antonio River. The missions were Indian
towns intended to promote and teach farming,
ranching, and a safe haven for the natives with
the church at the center.
